Responding to Partner's Opening Bid - Showing Preference

Responding to Partner's Opening Bid

Bidding

Partner opens and you with 6 HCP respond. you should bid spades here because bidding 1NT denies a 5 card Major suit. Partner rebids a lower ranked suit - you have equal lengths of cards in both suits so return partner to their first bid suit as it will be their longest suit. You cannot bid spades at the 2 level because you don't have enough points.

Acol Bidding

Partner opens and you with 6 HCP respond. you should bid spades here because bidding 1NT denies a 5 card Major suit. Partner rebids a lower ranked suit - you have equal lengths of cards in both suits so return partner to their first bid suit as it will be their longest suit. You cannot bid spades at the 2 level because you don't have enough points.

Your Plan

Counting your losers. 2 in spades, 1 in clubs and maybe 2 in diamonds. Draw trumps but deep finessing against west to have all the high cards in diamonds, then lead low club from dummy to hand finessing 10C, win 2 heart tricks.

The Play

Win the heart and lead 10D finessing west for KD and JD, win the heart return in dummy lead low club up to 10C in hand, win club return in hand, lead low trump up to dummy and cover whatever east plays, draw last round of trumps, play winning club tricks and winning trump tricks

Comment

You can make 8 tricks easily with this hand but you need to finesse the KD, JD and 9D from hand up to dummy to make 9 tricks.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
