Responding to Openers NoTrump Rebid

How do I bid when my partner rebids NoTrumps

Bidding

Partner opens and you bid your longest suit, partner rebids 1NT showing 12-14 HCP and a balanced hand, also denying that the opener has any 4 card major suits (otherwise they would have bid them) you count up partners point count and add your own count, you have enough points for 'game' so bid it. All pass.

Acol Bidding

Partner opens and you bid your longest suit. Partner then rebids 1NT showing 15-16 HCP and a balanced hand, also denying that the opener has any 4 card major suits (otherwise they would have bid them) you count up partners point count and add your own count, you have enough points for 'game' so bid it. All pass.

Your Plan

Dummy goes down and you count your winning tricks and you have only 8 despite the fact that you have enough HCP to be in game. You need to win at least 1 more trick in the diamond or heart suits. If its diamonds you have to lose twice in that suit for the diamonds to come good - so instead its better to hope your heart suit will deliver the ninth trick you need to make your contract.

The Play

Win the heart lead hoping that the opposition has underlead the AH! Now play your spades being very careful to play your honor cards in the short suit first so that when you play your clubs you do not become blocked in dummy.

Comment

This is a tricky hand to play you need to be careful about guarding your entries otherwise you could go light.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
