Negative Responses to Partners opening 2C bid

What do I respond to 2C if Ive got less than 6 points

Bidding

You partner has opened 2C so you know nothing about what cards they hold - just that they have 23+ points - with 7 or less points you must reply and you must tell partner about your point count. 2D is an artificial bid - it says nothing about your suit holdings and is all about your point count. Bid 2D and wait to see what partners suits are in their next bid. Partners rebid shows you a five card heart suit - with a fit AND a void (add another 5 points to your 7 count) you now have 12 total points so altogether you have 23+12=35 points thats enough for a small slam, so now bid 6H.

Your Plan

Only the club ace and diamond ace outstanding, you can ruff the diamond ace lead in dummy.

The Play

After the diamond Ace lead ruff it in dummy and the rest of your diamonds are good. You draw trumps - then run your spades and diamonds making your 6 Heart contract

Comment

The bidding is the difficult feature of this hand. If you had replied 2S or 2H instead of the 2D partner may have raised your 6H rebid to 7H which will go light

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
