Responder Raises a NoTrump Opening Bid

Practice playing a challenging 3NT and making contract?

Acol Bidding

Partner opens 1NT - you respond 3NT with your 16 HCP which is game. All pass.

Your Plan

Dummy goes down and you count your winning tricks 2 spade tricks, 2 heart tricks 1 club trick. so you have only 5 winners but you are contracted to make 9 (9-5=4) so you need to develop 4 more winners. If you directly finesse East for the KC by leading out the TC and ducking you will add another 2 club winners. Hearts - if you can directly finesse the JH and then TH against the QH being in wests hand you will add yet another winner, and if the other side lead out their AD and KD you may make another 2 tricks.

The Play

A spade lead, hoping to make your 10S duck in your hand and cover wests play. Lead the 10C up to your hand finessing for KC to be in easts hand play the 5C in hand and discard low on the 2 diamond returns, win the third diamond return and play the fourth diamond in dummy, enter your hand with a club and lead out a low heart cover what west plays but win with dummies 9H if you can. The rest of your cards are high.

This hand can make 10 tricks if you can make your finesses - otherwise its only 9 tricks.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
