Bridge Practice 'Hand of the Day'

Responder uses Stayman and asks about openers major suit holdings after a 1NT opening bid

What is a Stayman Bid

Bidding

Partner Opens 1NT - with your 4 hearts and 4 spades you want to know if you have a fit between you in a major suit - make a Stayman bid, an artificial bid asking about partners holding in the major suits. Partner responds positively and you should bid to game in their suit.

Acol Bidding

Partner Opens 1NT - with your 4 hearts and 4 spades you want to know if you have a fit between you in a major suit - make a Stayman bid, an artificial bid asking about partners holding in the major suits. Partner responds positively and you should bid to game in their suit.

Your Plan

Count your losing tricks when you are in a suit contract - at first glance it looks as if you have 1 spade and 2 club losers.

The Play

You win all diamonds and heart rounds losing only 1 spade and 2 club tricks

Comment

You make 10 tricks in suit contract which gives you 420/620 points - if you are in 3NT you can only make 8 tricks for -50 points

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
