Acol Bidding

Open 1H partner makes a double raise in hearts showing a fit and 10-12 points. You bid 4H. All Pass

Your Plan

Dummy goes down count your losers. Spades= 0; Hearts=1; Diamonds=0; Clubs=1. Finesse the QC and KH, ruff diamonds and spades in alternate hands

The Play

Win the spade lead, make a fake finesse by leading out the 9H, East covers so play AH, draw another round of trumps (it was a 2-2 split). Play your 2 top diamonds, and the KS discarding a low club, now ruff low diamonds in dummy and low spades in hand. with three cards left the spades suit has been established no need to take the club finesse which only has a 50-50% chance of success. Throw QH on the last spade and the last 2 tricks are yours.

Comment

Take a heart finesse, establish the fifth spade by cross ruffing so that you can discard the QC not risking the club finesse and you can make 13 tricks. After all the cards go down you see that the club finesse would have failed.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
