Your Plan

Count your winners. Spades=2; Hearts=2; Diamonds=2; Clubs=1. Need to develop 1 more trick to make this contract. Hearts looks like your best suit but the QH, JH and 9H are all out and with a probable 4-2 split. Spades and clubs are not able to be developed so diamonds it is with AD 10D 9D and 8D out. With likely a 4-2 split so lets make a safety play with diamonds just in case it's worse.

The Play

A diamond lead, so the split has to be 4-2 or longer, probably longer to be the longest and strongest suit for the opening lead. Hmm underleading the AD probably.... so win this trick with QD but duck after leading second diamond and east shows out so it's a 5-1 split.Lose to the AD return discarding a low heart (east discards a spade), and win the 10D return. Play low club up to QC, lose to KC, a club return goes to west with the AC. Win the diamond return, low club to JC play KH and AS. Enter hand with KS noticing east's JS discard, lose the 9S. for 8 tricks phew!!

Comment

This contract should only make 1NT, making the safety play with the diamonds at trick 2 was the saving grace for this hand.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
