Counting Your Winning Tricks - In No Trump Contracts

In No Trump Contracts

Bidding

Open 1C partner responds 1H you rebid 1S; Partner shows 11-12 points bidding 2NT; you bid game. All Pass

Acol Bidding

Open 1NT with 13 HCP and balanced distribution; Partner responds in hearts, technically here with partner showing a 6 card heart suit you should with 2 heart cards bid 4H but don't... bid 3NT. You have no shortages for ruffing, partner will correct to 4H if they have a hand that is too shapely for a NoTrump contract.

Your Plan

Count your winning tricks 1 in spades 2 in hearts ooops only 3 winners you have another 6 winning tricks to find to make your contract. Plan to draw out the AC and AD as soon as possible, which will give you 2 winners in diamonds and 3 winners in clubs, for a 6 th winner try to finesse the KS hoping its in easts hand, or finesse 10H hoping QH in wests hand

The Play

Duck the spade lead and win the spade return (you now have 2 extra spade winners. Your longest suit is hearts; lead the KH and low heart to 10H. Win the second diamond return lead AH, while you have control over all suits still lead QC so you can enter hans and winning spades, win diamond return enter hand and the rest of the tricks are yours.

Comment

You can make 9 tricks in 3NT if you develop winners in your spades and club suits. The heart suit does not develop because of the 4-2 split. Even with 26 points combined played in 4H these hands can only make 9 tricks.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
