Openers first bid- In 1H you can make 9 tricks - try it yourself!

Practice playing openers first bid

Bidding

With 18 HCP the opening bid here is 1H. Even though the spade suit is stronger, the heart suit is longer and should be bid first.
If you get the chance to bid again you would then bid your spade suit

Acol Bidding

Your Plan

Dummy goes down in a contract of 1H you need 7 tricks, but you can count 9. Plan your play and count your losing tricks. So 3 losing heart tricks and 1 losing club trick, so you should easily make 9 tricks drawing trumps as soon as possible.

The Play

Win the diamond lead and lead a low trump, win the diamond return and lead a low trump again. Win the club return and lead your last round of trumps

Comment

With a 5-3 trump fit so count the outstanding trumps. There are 5, if they are split 3-2 (60% of the time they are) you will draw them out in 3 rounds.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
