Bidding to Game

Why do I need to try to bid game if I can

Bidding

Partner Opens - you count your points and add them together - you have at least 27, enough to bid Game in No Trumps

Acol Bidding

Partner Opens and after your suit bid at the level of 1 they rebid NoTrumps - you count your points and add them together - you have at least 27, enough to bid Game in No Trumps

Your Plan

Count your winners - 3 in clubs, 3 in diamonds 1 in hearts and none in spades. If you can get out the Ace of spades you will have 2 more spade tricks, but you only have 1 sopper in hearts, lets hope the opposition don't lead hearts!

The Play

Ouch the opposition leads hearts - you have two choices either go up with your Ace hearts straight away ... then lead out spades until the ace drops OR duck 2 heart rounds ... it depends on how lucky you think you are (will the hearts be split 4-3 or will someone have 6 and their partner have 1 in which case you will have a very uncomfortable time. You choose. :-).

Comment

Luckily for you the heart split was 4-3 and more high hearts were in the 3 hand so they couldn't keep leading them at you. If you bid 2NT and make 10 tricks you will only score 180 points - if you bid game however and make 10 tricks your score is 430 points
If you go up with the AH first and play spades you can make 10 tricks - if you make the safety play of holding up for 2 rounds of hearts you only make 9 tricks.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
