Practice playing when all seats are vulnerable (Vul)

What do I need to know about vulnerability?

Bidding

Notice that the positions on the bidding pad are in red? This means that North (N) South (S) West (W) and East (E) are all vulnerable Lesson on Vulnerability . Red is for DANGER - beware the stakes suddenly get higher. Bonuses are much higher but the penalties for going light are also much bigger. After you and your partner have both bid your minor suits - you show your really strong hand (15+ points and a void in hearts) by jumping to 3 spades - horror of horrors partner goes 3 NoTrumps and you have a void! Oh well then after partners bid it its his responsibility if you go light - your decision is... should you leave it in No Trumps or take partner out to 5 diamonds?..... the hints menu at this point says to pass but it is a legitimate response to take partner out to 5 diamonds with your void and your vulnerability.

Your Plan

Count your winning tricks: 2 in hearts - 5 in clubs 4 in diamonds - this should be a breeze :)

The Play

In 3NT: Win the heart lead play all your club winners and then all the diamond winners ending up in dummy hand - play the KH and then play then low heart. This is because you have been counting the oppositions heart discards and you have seen that there are no more hearts out therefore the 3H is high. you lose the last spade trick for 12 tricks total

Comment

In 3NT with a heart lead you can make 12 tricks giving you a score of 660 points - phew! In 5 Diamonds you can also make 12 tricks but you will only get 620 points for this contract. Check out the scores for a NoTrumps vs a Minor Suit Game contract here . NoTrumps is a bigger risk especially with the heart void... but it can pay off.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
