Responding to a 2 opening bid

Using Relay Bids

Bidding

Partner opens 2C, opponents overcall 2H, you can't make a relay bid but with points you can make a negative double "X" showing 5+ points and denying a 5 card major suit. Partner rebids 3D and now you can show your 4 card spade suit, bid 3S, without a fit partner will bid 3NT, with a fit he'll bid 4S. All Pass

Acol Bidding

Your Plan

In a suit count your losers; spades=0; Hearts=1; Diamonds=1; Clubs=1. You contract looks safe. Draw trumps and they play your winners in your side suits ensuring you play the honors in the short suit first so you don't get blocked.

The Play

Lose the heart lead and return. win the club return in the short suit. Draw trumps after 3 rounds all trumps are out. Play AD and KD noticing that the QD and JD have dropped so your 10D is high. Play 10D AC ruff 9H, discard JC on a diamond and ruff the last diamond.

Comment

If you bid 2S over opponents 2H partner thinks you have 10+ points anda 5 card spade suit. They will jump straight to 6S which cannot be made with a heart lead. Making 11 tricks.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
