Responding to a strong 2NT opening bid

What will you bid?

Bidding

Partner opens 2NT. With 11 points you are interested in slam but you need to show your 5 card heart suit as well, so you bid 3H, partner shows you heart fit now you add your points to partner's 34 = 12+22(minimum) and bid 6H. All Pass

Acol Bidding

Partner opens 2NT. With 11 points you are interested in slam but you need to show your 5 card heart suit as well, so you bid 3H, partner shows you heart fit now you add your points to partner's 34 = 12+22(minimum) and bid 6H. All Pass

Your Plan

In a suit count your losers. Spades=1; Hearts=1; Diamonds=0; Clubs=0; Hmm you are light unless a spade finesse works or you can drop the QH. Try the heart first as its trumps and you need to clear these asap.

The Play

Win the diamond lead and play AH followed by the KH., yay the QH and JH are out! Three rounds of trumps and they are all out. Now you have to choose do you throw a spade on the KD or make the finesse, finesses only work 50% of the time so lets discard a spade on KD and the ruff low spades. Lead out the AS play QC and JC, then cross to your hand by ruffing a low spade.

Comment

The KS was on the wrong side so the finesse fails in this hand. Avoiding the finesse and playing for the drop of QH and JH makes this 11 trick hand into a 13 trick hand.

NOTE: The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand. Beginners should also make extensive use of the 'Hint' button. The hints are computer generated and quite conservative, but are often useful if you are looking for a good suggestion.
