Bidding

Partner opens the bidding and the opposition overcall, disconcerting as this may be it is still your job to bid to show your partner the points and suits you hold in your hand. Over the 1H (1 heart) overcall you should bid 1S (1 spade) showing 6+ points and a four card spade suit. Partner's rebid 'X' is a support double and shows that he has 3 card support for your spade suit. It is then your choice to bid game in No Trumps or Diamonds, of course you 2NT as it gives more points. the opposition still bid hearts, you bid 3NT hoping your heart holding is good enough

Plan Before You Play

Count your winners, 5 diamonds, 2 spades, and 1 club trick. If the hearts don't trap your QH under the Ace King you should also have a heart winner. Plan to duck until the AH and KH are out.

The Play

Duck the heart lead until the AH and KH have been played leaving the QH as a stop. Play diamonds next being sure to play the diamond honors in the short suit first. you are very interested in making your JS (jack of spades) into another winner so be sure to watch the opposition discards carefully counting the spades discarded. If the opposition discard spades you may be able promote the 6S into a winning card

Comment
