Bidding

Partner opens 1H (showing you their 5+ heart suit) you show your 4 card spade suit bidding 1S - partner shows you 4 spades by bidding 2S - the big challenge is do you show partner your 5-3 heart fit by bidding game in hearts or do you choose the spade suit 4-4 fit and bid game in spades? In this situation show your 4 card spade suit and then in a later bid show partner your points. The rules of Bridge bidding state that if you can support partner's major suit you should do that as soon as possible however in this situation it isn't possible to show your suit holdings and your point count in 1 bid, as responder there need to be 2 separate bids. Bid 4S. All pass.

Plan Before You Play

Count your losers in a suit contract None in spades 1 in hearts 1 in diamonds and 1 in clubs. so your contract looks safe. How can I make overtricks? Establishing and running the hearts at the same time discarding the clubs in you hand may give you an overtrick

The Play

Win the heart lead and draw trumps - keep playing the hearts to extract the KH. Lose to the AD win the QD -play the QH and ruff the last diamond in dummy and run the hearts discarding the clubs in your hand, ruff the small club from dummy in your hand. Making 11 tricks.

Comment

This hand can be played in either 4H or 4S. In 4H you make 10 tricks in 4S you can make 11 tricks.

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
