Open 1H, planning to rebid diamonds next. That way if they have minimum points your partner will be able to show their suit preference without raising the level. Open 1H, planning to rebid diamonds next. That way if they have minimum points your partner will be able to show their suit preference without raising the level. Plan Before You Play
In a No Trump contract count your winners to see how many more winners you need to develop. So you have 1 in spades, 2 in hearts, 2 in diamonds and 2 in clubs - that is 7 tricks, you need to develop 1 more winner to make your contract. Hearts is the most likely as you have 6 of the top seven hearts.
The Play
AS lead, lose that trick and the switch to AC, win the club return and lead out the 10H, covered by easts QH and your AH. Play a low diamond to JD which extracts the AD, apart from the KS the rest of the tricks are yours.
Comment
You only raise partner's bid to 3NT if you have points in the higher range for a 1 level opening bid. From partner's 2NT bid you know that they have 11-12 HCP and a hold in spades. Makes 9 tricks.
The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
