Bidding

East opens 1S and you overcall with a 5 card major suit with 11 HCP plus 2 DP's for your long suits holding . Partner supports your major suit now you can revalue DP's using suit shortages having found a fit. With these extra 4 DP's your hand is now worth 15 TP's. Partners single raise shows you that they have 6-9 total points. The opposition compete up to 3S, so you with these extra values are free to bid 4H. All Pass

Plan Before You Play

In a suit contract after the opening lead has been made stop and plan your play by counting your losing tricks . You have no heart losers, 1 club loser, 1 diamond loser and 1 spade loser. So you should be able to make 10 tricks with this deal. Plan is to draw trumps and try to establish winners in your diamond suit, hopefully discarding club and spade losers.

The Play

Win the opening spade lead, draw trumps (how many rounds do you need to draw out all oppositions trump suit cards?). Lose to the AC and AD, after 2 rounds of diamonds all your small diamonds are high.

Comment

North - South can make 4 hearts with only 20 HCP - but East West can make 3 spades with their 20 HCP

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
