For this game you are the defense, and you have the responsibility of making the opening lead against a suit.

Acol Bidding

In this hand West opens 1H (1 Heart) and East performs a double raise to 3H (3 Hearts) and West then bids game 4H (4 Hearts). For this game you are the defense, and you have the responsibility of making the opening lead against a suit.

Plan Before You Play

Standard American Players - Hopefully your AH, KH, Qh< are winning tricks, you need to win as many other tricks as you can.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Acol Players -You want to urgently develop your winners before declarer can develop his.
You want to draw trumps only AFTER declarer has used up their extra trump length in order to stop them ruffing your winners, watch them lose control!
The Play
Standard American Players -After partner leads diamonds you need to take the KD and return a diamond. West ruffs his AD??? and draws trumps. Count them. After 4 rounds of trumps declarer has no more so cannot ruff your side suits. After North wins a club and a diamond trick, overtake the 8D and the next 4 tricks are yours.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Acol Players -Trumps is hearts and you have the top three of them, so three certain tricks. If you and partner can develop any other winning cards you will be able to take this contract light! The usual wisdom for Opening Leads is to play the top of a sequence or fourth highest from your longest and strongest suit, in this case leading out the trump sequence will not give you any advantages, whereas leading the 4th highest card from your longest and strongest suit develop a winner. In your hand you have a sequence but it is in trumps, you will win these anyway.

Comment

Standard American Players - you can take the contract 3 light for 150 points to your side!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Acol Players -So....lead your fourth highest card from your longest and strongest suit and every time you get the lead, keep on leading your diamonds so that when the opposition run out of trumps, you have winners and can take the contract 3 light for 150 points to your side!
The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
