Bidding

Open the highest ranking of your two five card suits first, the opposition overcall diamonds and partner supports your spade suit bid. Show partner you heart suit by bidding 3H and because you have found a fit you are able to revalue your hand giving yourself 3 extra distribution points for your club singleton and 1 extra point for your diamond doubleton, so now you have 19 TP's, if partner has 7 points you have enough to be in Game. Your partner shows preference and bids game in spades

Plan Before You Play

Plan your play and count your losing tricks Spades:1, Hearts:0, Diamonds:2, Clubs:0. You can make this contract.

The Play

Lose the first 2 diamond tricks, ruff the JD return in dummy discarding a low heart in your hand. Lead out the 9S ducking if east plays lower, leads out the 8S cover QS with KS; play the JS dropping the 10S ( you were counting and knew this would happen weren't you?) You will need to enter the opposite hand with your low club, returning to your hand with a low heart after the AC and KC . Play AH and then KH, enter your hand with low heart, play AH and KH and squeeze by playing your last spade noticing west discards his QH, but east still holds his JH.

Comment

11 tricks are yours if you make 2 finesses of spades against east and ruff the JD and a low heart in dummy before drawing all the trump suit.

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
