Bidding

The opponents open 1H you make a takeout double "X" showing an opening hand and at least 3 card support for all the unbid suits (a slight exaggeration with your club suit but sometimes you need to decide which is your least dishonest bid). Partner responds 2D and holding 4 cards in their suit raise them, inviting them to bid game if they have more than minimum values.

Acol Bidding

Plan Before You Play

Check if the opposition lead is 4th highest from longest and strongest suit so the QS is probably in wests hand. Counting your losers you have 1 loser in spades; 1 in hearts; probably 2 in diamonds and 2 in clubs. So 6 losers (you will not make 9 tricks unless you can develop an extra winner. Plan to discard heart loser on the fourth round of spades for a heart ruff. Another winner may come from a diamond finesse against west holding both the KD and QD. Avoid playing clubs wait for the opposition to lead them.

The Play

Duck the spade lead to develop JS ... developing 3 winners in spades. Win the heart return in your hand to lead a low diamond up to dummy, another round of diamonds, win the heart return and now you must play your spades before the other side lead and win a third heart trick, JS first then a low one to your hand discarding the losing heart on the fourth round of spades hoping that west doesn't ruff spades. Draw the last trump they win the club return ruff the heart return and the KC is yours

Comment

The opposition if they bid can make 3H (9 tricks). You can also make 9 tricks in diamonds if the hand that has the length in diamonds also has length in spades, allowing you to discard a losing heart in dummy.

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
