Acol Bidding

Open 1H with this hand with 3 distribution points on top of your 9 HCP making 12TP with a 6 and a 5 card suit. Partner responds 2C, East makes a takeout double. Bid your diamonds 3D and partner shows preference returning you to your heart suit 3H. All Pass.

Plan Before You Play

Count your losing tricks in a suit contract. Spades:0, Hearts:2, Diamonds:1, Clubs:0. You should make your contract.

The Play

Win the spade opening lead. Play the AC and take a diamond finesse hoping east has the KD, winning with the QD then play AD. Lead a low diamond for a ruff but when west ruffs discard a club instead. Win the spade return discarding a low diamond. Ruff a low club, and then ruff a low diamond. Ruff a low club, then lead trumps, losing 2 tricks but winning the rest of them. Making 10 tricks

Comment

North/South can make 10 tricks in hearts or 9 tricks in diamonds or 8 tricks in clubs with this hand. With 20 HCP the correct place to be is in 3H.

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
