Bidding

Partner opens 1H the opposition overcall 1S, you respond 2C - the opposition are bidding spades, hmm a very lively auction. West supports his partners spades and north supports your club suit! The question is, is your spade queen stop enough for 3NT? Bid it anyway. The opposition and your partner keep on bidding and you end up in 5C.

Acol Bidding

Plan Before You Play

Count your losing tricks in a suit contract. Spades:0, Hearts:1, Diamonds:1, Clubs:1. You need to develop 1 more winner to make this contract. Play the clubs to drop the QC and try a heart ruff and diamond finesse for QD and KD.

The Play

Ruff the AS lead. Play 2 rounds of trumps (leaving 1 in dummy to ruff a spade return if you need to). Play AH and KH and ruff a low heart, noticing that the JH and QH are now out so your 10H is high. Play KD and AD, discard a low diamond on the 10H, which west ruffs with the outstanding trump card. West returns a diamond which you cover with 10D. Discard QS on the 7H and the last 2 tricks are yours.

Comment

You can take this contract 3 light doubled and vulnerable which nets you 1100 points. Even if you bid 6C and make it (which you can with this hand as long as you avoid playing diamonds and cross ruff the hearts and spades) you will only get 920 points.

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
