East opens 1S, you make a take-out double "X" showing you have a strong hand 13+ and are happy for partner to choose the trump suit. Opposition responds 1NT and your partner passes because the opponents bid cancels your double and partner is excused from bidding - bid your diamonds over the opposition's 2S bid.
Acol Bidding
East opens 1S, you make a take-out double "X" showing you have a strong hand 13+ and are happy for partner to choose the trump suit. Opposition responds 1NT and your partner passes because the opponents bid cancels your double and partner is excused from bidding - bid your diamonds over the opposition's 2S bid.
Plan Before You Play
Opposition responds 1NT showing 6-8 HCP and at least 2 cards in each suit so you can usually count on two rounds of each suit before the opposition are in danger of over ruffing small cards in your side suits. Finesse the JH and KC hoping they are with east. One round of trumps, cross ruffing and then draw rest of the trumps at the end of the game
The Play
Ruff the spade lead, draw 1 round of trumps ending up in dummy, lead a low club up to the QC in hand planning to cover the KC if it is played otherwise ducking . Play the AC and ruff a low club in dummy. Lead a low heart from dummy and finesse playing the 10H from your hand. Ruff the spade return in your hand, ruff a fourth round of clubs high. Return to hand with hearts draw the rest of the trumps and win the remaining heart.
Comment
In 3D you can make 12 tricks from this hand. You need to delay drawing trumps until you have finessed east for the KC, west for the AH, and ruffed the two low clubs in declarers hand. All that effort for only 170 points! If you only make 9 tricks you will only get 110 points. If you leave the opposite side in a spade contract you can take them 1 light doubled for a score of 100 points
The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
