Acol Bidding
You open 1D, partner responds 1S you rebid 2NT showing 18-19 points and a balanced hand. No fit. Partner bids you to game in spades.
Plan Before You Play
You put your hand down, and partners is revealed. In a suit count your losing tricks. Spades:1, Hearts:0, Diamonds:2; Clubs:2. You need to eliminate 2 losers to make your contract. Finessing the club suit and the diamond suit may deliver extra tricks
The Play
A club lead, the AC wins the first trick cover the QC with the KC and now you've made the JC into a winner. Draw trumps, shock horror, east has all of your outstanding trump cards. Thank goodness you have 6 spades in one hand, you won't lose control of your trump suit. Draw trumps losing the 3rd round to QS, win the Club return, cross to your hand with KH, draw the last 2 trumps losing the last trick win the heart return (thank goodness he didn't lead diamonds as you would go light) Play all your hearts discarding the losing diamond on the QH, ruff the KD, for 10 tricks.
Comment
If your trump suit were distributed 4-4 between yours and dummy's hand, drawing trumps would mean that you would lose control of the trump suit. Then East could use it to make the oppositions diamonds into winners for them.
The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
