Bidding

West opens, your partner overcalls diamonds, East raises to 2 spades, with your 8 card heart suit and 10+ points bid 3H, if you pass now partner will rebid his diamonds your partner supports you but the pesky opposition keep on bidding spades, So bid 5H!

Acol Bidding

West opens, your partner overcalls diamonds, East raises to 2 spades, with your 8 card heart suit and 10+ points bid 3H, your partner supports you but the pesky opposition keep on bidding spades, think about points now, opposition are vulnerable that means -620 points for you if they make, however even doubled if you are 1 trick light it is only -100 points for your side as you have 9 tricks in your own hand and partner has supported you on top of that! So bid 5H!

Plan Before You Play

Dummy goes down! wow fantastic! if you can discard your 2 club losers on the Ace and King of diamonds you will make 5H as long as the opposition don't get to ruff your two top diamonds. The cross ruff spades and clubs and draw trumps last.

The Play

Ruff the spade lead, play AD, KD discarding the 4C and 3C. Ruff a club and then ruff a spade, ruff JD with the 10H (only the QH can beat it) Ruff a second spade, ruff a club, now draw trumps, waiting till the very last trick to play your QS to give the opposition the opportunity to discard the wrong suit! which of course they don't.

Comment

Making 12 tricks. Think about points now, opposition are vulnerable that means -620 points for you if they make, however even doubled if you are 1 trick light it is only -100 points for your side as you have 9 tricks in your own hand and partner has supported you on top of that!

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
