Bidding

Open 1S, the opposition East makes a takeout double but your partner shows points by bidding 2C.
You rebid 2H and partner shows preference for spades by returning you to the spade suit, meaning they have more spades than hearts. All Pass

Plan Before You Play

Dummy goes down, ooops they have 1 spade and 0 hearts. Thank goodness you didn't keep bidding. Count your losers. Spades:1, Hearts: 1, Diamonds:2, Clubs:2. You should make this contract if you can eliminate diamond losers.

The Play

Heart lead. Win with the AH and lead a low diamond to KD, east wins with AD and returns a heart. Play low heart from your hand and ruff with 9S, lead out the QD discarding 9C in your hand. ruff a small club in your hand. Now draw 3 rounds of trumps. West leads back a heart, win with the KH. Play your last three trump cards and lose the last heart trick.

Comment

If you haven't drawn trumps you can usually hope for two rounds in a suit before the opposition can cross ruff tricks.

The above commentary is intended as a guideline only. As with any Bridge hand there are many ways to bid and play any hand.
