Partner opens 2NT showing 20-22 HCP and no 5 card major suit. With 2 five card majors you would feel far happier in a major suit contract. The
Stayman bid is designed for this purpose. Bidding 3C asks you partner to bid his 4 card major suits in ascending order (lowest ranked suit first). Partner bids 2S denying a 4 card heart suit - you raise to 4S. All pass.

Dummy goes down and you count your losers. None in spades and hearts 1 in diamonds and 2 in clubs. This contract appears safe if you draw trumps as soon as possible - overtricks will come from not playing the club suit and a diamond and heart ruff.
Win the diamond lead and draw 2 rounds of trumps, play your high hearts and diamonds in hand enter dummy with a low heart to the KH and play your heart suit until west plays the JH which you ruff in hand and then ruff your small third diamond in dummy, play your last heart then trumps and your last club from dummy - making 12 tricks.
Try bidding 3NT and see how many tricks you get ( you can make 11) - this will show you the value of incorporating the Stayman convention into your system
