Responding after a Jacoby Transfer has been made

Why use them?

To keep the bidding going…
  • The strong hand is not on the table
  • Opening leads go up  to the strong hand (meaning the strong hand is last to play
  • Allows bidding space for responder to more accurately describe their hand

Transfers give the responder an extra chance to make another bid. This can often help you determine the best level and suit to play in.

Today’s Hand of the Day

Bidding and Playing Slams 1/7
When 4C is not Gerber and Jump Shift bids

Bidding
Using the Rule of Twenty you can open this hand 10 points + 6 clubs + 6 diamonds = 22: An opening hand – 1D
West overcalls 1S
North makes a Jump Shift bid 3H showing 16+ points and a five(or plus) Heart suit
East bids 3S – THIS IS GETTING REALLY ANNOYING from the opposition
Show your six card club suit and bid it at the lowest level – 4C (if you were Ace asking for a suit contract you should bid 4NT)…PLAY NOW

What does opener do?

Opener is required to complete the transfer. By bidding the next higher suit. Remember you have already described your hand accurately by opening 1NT. There is no need for you to further describe your hand.

Responders Rebid after the Transfer is Complete 1NT – 2♥ (transfer); 2♥

  • Pass = Weak hand (0-7 pts.).
  • 2NT = Invitational to 4♥or 3NT, 5 cards in suit, and balance-ish hand.
  • 3NT = Game values for 4♥ or 3NT, usually 5 cards in suit.
  • 3♥ = Invitational to 4♥, 6 or more cards in suit.
  • 4♥ = Game values, 6 or more cards in your suit.
  • New suit = Forcing to game, showing a second suit. Many books say 5-card second suit, but I think with 5-4-3-1 or 5-4-2-2 you hand can be very hard to describe otherwise
